Stone Hill Winery Awarded Governor's Cup Top Honor 5 Years in a Row

(Hermann, MO) – Stone Hill Winery is once again celebrating its Missouri Wine Competition accolades. Receiving both the Governor’s Cup for Best Wine Produced in Missouri for its 2020 Chambourcin and the C.V. Riley Award for Best Norton Produced in Missouri for its 2020 Norton, this marks the fifth competition in a row where the winery received the top honor. Along with the top two honors, Stone Hill Winery received Best of Class Dry Red for its 2020 Chambourcin, Best of Class Sparkling for its Brut Rosé, and Best Varietal for its 2021 Traminette as well as 11 golds, 14 silvers, and 8 bronze. The winery also recently received a 90 pt rating for its 2019 Norton from the Decanter World Wine Awards, the only non-West Coast American wine to do so.

“With every vintage, you question how the consumer will react, so it is awesome to have these accolades showcase that our team made the right calls with the wine and grapes all year,” said Shaun Turnbull, Head Winemaker for Stone Hill Winery. “Everyone from the vineyard and the cellar came together to make something special yet again.”

The Missouri Wine Competition is run by the State of Missouri’s Wine and Grape Board and features national and regional wine experts and sommeliers as judges for the two-day blind tasting. Over 235 wines were entered into the competition this year, with one receiving the coveted Governor’s Cup and the title of Best Missouri Wine.

The wins by Stone Hill Winery coincide with their celebration of the 175th anniversary of the winery’s founding back in 1847 and join a long legacy of quality winemaking. Of the 11 C.V. Riley awards given since the award’s inception in 2011, Stone Hill Winery has received 7. Similarly, Stone Hill Winery has been awarded 14 of the 27 Governor’s Cups given by the Missouri Wine Competition since its establishment.

“It is such an honor to receive the Governor’s Cup from the Missouri Wine Competition for a fifth year in a row. It is doubly special as we are celebrating our 175th anniversary as Missouri’s first winery. Watching this industry grow and evolve alongside us has been gratifying while also keeping the pressure on us to always improve,” said Jon Held, President and Second-Generation Owner of Stone Hill Winery. “Our track record is thanks to the diligence and hard work of our vineyard and cellar teams.”
