Event Name:
Youth Arts Festical
Description
Meet the organizer of the LaGrange County Youth Arts Festival. As a sophomore at Lakeland High School, Lydia Jacobson has volunteered at the LaGrange County Arts Festival in June for the last 2 years. This inspired her to organize a similar event featuring junior high and senior high school students.
“LaGrange County Arts works hard to include teens in their summer festival, but for many of us, it’s difficult to be a part of an event in the middle of summer. I hope by doing a separate festival during the school year, students who are unavailable in the summer will be able to participate,” Lydia says.
Lydia is a youth advisor of LaGrange County Arts. She took her idea to their board, and they jumped at the chance to support this event.
Lydia herself is an artist. She is the president of Lakeland’s Art Club. She plays flute in Lakeland’s concert band, pep band, and marching band. She also plays bass guitar for the jazz band and show choir, as well as for her church’s praise band. Being in all these groups has put her in the perfect position to invite fellow artists to this event.
Using her church, she is planning on having young artists display their work. Musicians will perform from the fellowship hall stage, where she plays weekly. She even has concessions planned. People can get something to eat, sit, and enjoy the music.
“Mr. Varner and Mrs. Jukola let me put signups in their rooms. From those, I already have a lot of students signed up! Now, we just need the community to come out and support them,” she says.
The top goal is to give the students a stage to share their talent. The second is to provide an opportunity for the community to donate to the clubs that help these students develop their skills. There will be a chance to support the artists directly through purchasing artwork and a tip jar for musicians. You can also donate to art clubs and music clubs.
LaGrange County Youth Arts Festival will take place on April 20 at LaGrange First United Methodist Church, 10-3. If you are a youth wanting to display art or perform, contact Lydia Jacobson through her mom’s email, crystal.jacobson@inumc.org. Stop by April 20 from 10-3 to support local students and art and music clubs. Grab some lunch while you’re there from the concession stand. If you want to support the creativity of local youth, stop by to donate.
