National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum 

Proudly celebrating 25 years, the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum is the showcase of American mining and boasts one of the most comprehensive mining memorabilia, equipment and mineral collections in North America.  The only mining museum to have a federal charter from the U.S. Congress, it is the national museum charged with preserving, sharing, honoring and educating the public about the country’s mining industry and its people. 

More than 25,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space fills our historic campus, the original 1890’s Leadville High School located in the Leadville Historic District, guaranteeing a fascinating experience for the whole family.  Highlights include life-size, historic replica mines, extensive gem and mineral specimens, scale models of historic mining towns and railroads, interactive children’s exhibits, educational displays, dioramas and many fine pieces of artworks from sculptures to murals.

Matchless Mine and Baby Doe's Cabin

Complement your visit with a combo ticket to the famous Matchless Mine and Baby Doe's Cabin (Summer season only). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this site symbolizes the incredible wealth and good fortune of the never-to-be-recaptured mining boom days and the lonely seclusion of those who waited for the “good” times to return again.

The mine complex, consisting of the hoist house, head frame, powder magazine and cabin was purchased in 1879 by Silver King, H.A.W. Tabor.

The site is also famous for the 30+ year seclusion of Tabor’s widow, Elizabeth “Baby Doe” Tabor.  Once extraordinarily rich and then forced into poverty, Mrs. Tabor made the cabin her home, waiting in vain for the re-opening of the Matchless.

Visitors can experience this intriguing story and see the historic mine - a true legacy of the American West.  Guides, well versed in the history surrounding the legend of the Tabors and the Mine, wait to greet you, where they recount the most amazing tale of splendor and melancholy in Colorado’s history.

Spaces range from our basic meeting rooms and Longyear Auditorium, to the historic Grace Moolick Board Room, and for larger event, the Barbor Pavillion, a ballroom complete with stage, wood dance floor, and catering kitchen.
