Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church is a welcoming Lutheran congregation in Chicago, Illinois, 60638, with roots that began in humble circumstances. In November 1939, a small group of Lutherans gathered for worship in a bungalow at the northeast corner of Parkside Avenue and 52nd Street. By January 24, 1940, they formally organized a congregation and called Rev. Hugo Bloedel as their first pastor, naming it Parkside Avenue Evangelical Lutheran Church. The official founding date is February 4, 1940, when the congregation was fully organized and began its ministry as a growing church family centered on faith and community.
As the congregation expanded, they secured land at South Major Avenue and 53rd Street, purchasing six lots for a permanent church home. The cornerstone was laid on May 18, 1941, and the new building was dedicated on September 28, 1941, marking a major milestone in their development. Earlier that same year, on August 3, 1941, the congregation adopted its lasting name, Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church, meaning “The Glory of God.” Today, the church continues its mission in Chicago, rooted in its rich history of faith, service, and dedication to worshiping God together.
