Humane Society of Northeast Georgia
The mission of the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia is ? Helping animals and people live better. . together.?
The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, located in Gainesville, Georgia, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1913 by Hall County schoolteacher Bessie Bickers. As one of the oldest animal welfare facilities in Georgia, the organization has a long-standing commitment to providing care and support for homeless animals.
Bessie Bickers, affectionately known as Miss Bessie to her friends and students, demonstrated her dedication to animal welfare by purchasing five acres of land and a house with $5,000 from her retirement fund. She built kennels on the property and arranged for a young couple to live there rent-free in order to care for the animals. Miss Bessie's tireless efforts often saw her working before dawn or after dark to rescue homeless animals in Hall County.
Miss Bessie had high standards for those looking to adopt animals from the Humane Society. Prospective adopters were required to promise humane care for their new pet and agree not to sell, trade, or dispose of the animal without returning it to the Humane Society. Miss Bessie was known for checking up on adopted animals and would take them back if she found they were not being cared for properly.
Upon her passing, Miss Bessie's family transferred the land at 845 West Ridge Road to the Humane Society of Hall County, which is now known as the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia. The organization continues to operate from this location today.
While some aspects have evolved, such as advancements in animal care practices and technology, the fundamental principles established by Miss Bessie remain at the core of the organization's mission. The Humane Society of Northeast Georgia strives to uphold its legacy by fostering a compassionate community that values and cares for all animals.
