After working with the Rocky Mountain Kids Inc. organization for a few years, Nicholas Thompson realized there was a critical need for youth support networks in southern Colorado, and after many months of planning, fundraising, and coordinating with State agencies, Brad’s House was officially opened in November 2017. Brad’s House is located in Monument, Colorado and works with boys ages 10-14 who have experienced abuse or neglect at home, struggle to manage their physical and emotional behavior, or have untreated mental or physical deficits. In many cases, the length of the stay at Brad’s House is between six months and two years, and often ends with the child’s reunification with their family.

The program at Brad’s House focuses on helping the young men discover a sense of self-identity, accountability, and sustainability to the extent that should be expected from a young man. The staff working at Brad’s House offer mentorship, support, and advice while empowering each individual to make their own decisions and feel in control of their own lives. The program is structured to teach essential living skills such as cooking, cleanliness, and personal hygiene. The boys also work individually with Brad’s House staff to set individual life goals and discuss their unique personal struggles, as well as receive individual treatment as needed or required by the state.

Brad’s House is unique in that it is one of the few sanctuaries that specializes in treatment for young boys ages 10-14 age range. This age range is typically too young for the boys to be placed in an older living facility where older boys can create a hostile and sometimes dangerous environment for the younger boys. Conversely, many adopting families choose to adopt much younger children who have experienced less trauma in their lives. Sadly, the 10-14 age range is similar to a limbo where there is no ideal location for troubled boys. Brad’s House aims to solve this for as many boys as they can.
