Harry's Steakhouse
Harry's Steakhouse, located in Grand Forks, North Dakota, holds a special significance for our family. The decision to build our restaurant here was deeply rooted in the history of this location. Many years ago, my father, "Happy Harry" Gershman, opened a restaurant in a small two-story structure next to the Empire Theatre at 5th and DeMers. He took great pride in serving "filets from Chicago" at his establishment. Eventually, he replaced the restaurant with his first liquor store, Central Package Store, at this exact location in 1944.
In 1970, Urban Renewal demolished the original building that had been standing since the turn of the century. In its place, the Internal Revenue Service constructed and occupied the building that stands today. In 2018, we purchased it and embarked on a three-year renovation project. This involved gutting the building, raising the roof by seven feet, constructing internal brick walls, and installing state-of-the-art HVAC systems, lighting, plumbing, kitchen equipment and bar facilities. Essentially everything you see within our establishment is new except for the exterior brick.
For us as a family, building a classic 1940s style steakhouse on this very corner was like "rounding the circle" after 77 years. We are proud to offer our guests an experience that takes them back in time while enjoying their evening with us.
We hope you enjoy your visit to Harry's Steakhouse and appreciate you joining us as we continue to honor our family's legacy in this historic location. Thank you for choosing to dine with us, and we look forward to providing you with an unforgettable dining experience.
