Event Name:
Discovering History: Ulysses S. Grant, China, and Chinese Americans in the Civil War
Description

Ulysses S. Grant maintained an interesting, complicated relationship with Chinese Americans and the Chinese nation during his lifetime. During the Civil War, numerous Chinese Americans served in his ranks. One of them, Joseph Pierce, fought at Gettysburg and was promoted to corporal in the Union army. During his presidency, thousands of Chinese immigrants came to the United States to start new lives.

After two terms as the 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant was the first president to take a world tour, and he and Julia spent two weeks in China, where they met with leading members of the royal family and government of the Qing dynasty, and were warmly welcomed by the Chinese people. Grant visited China towards the end of his two-and-a-half-year world tour, remarking that Hong Kong was one of the finest cities he had ever seen.

This half-day program will feature several speakers discussing Chinese Americans during the Civil War and Grant’s presidency, and Grant’s own experiences in China during his world tour. The program is free, but seating is limited to 40 and reservations are required.
