The fourth in this free event series will be Going Mobile- Active Transportation for our Communities focusing on creating increased walking and biking opportunities locally and reducing dependency on fossil fuel powered transportation and recreation. With two leading authorities on this topic, the program will present a vision reflecting what’s possible in implementing strategies to increase walking and biking as modes of transport and also present a case study from the City of Kingston’s efforts over the past decade. The program is intended for local municipal officials and private citizens alike. Many rural communities nationwide similar to those found throughout the Catskill region are successfully taking tangible steps to improve resiliency, mobility and quality of life while reducing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. This spurs questions such as: what kinds of changes can we make locally? Where do we make them, and how can we start? Jeff Olson, Principal at Alta Planning and Design and author of the book “The Third Mode: Towards a Green Society and Tim Weidemann, Ulster County Assistant Deputy County Executive and a leader in the development of the Greenline and Kingston’s Pedestrian-Bicycle friendly infrastructure will lead an evening exploring these topics. The speakers will share what’s happening nationwide as well as the steps to be taken locally to implement such an initiative.

They will provide examples of other communities that have successfully made such shifts to enhance walking and biking. The second hour of the evening will be a breakout session with the audience divided into small groups to brainstorm on a relevant topic and then report their findings out to the entire audience before concluding the evening.

Jeff Olson is an architect, planner, and author who has been involved in greenways, open space, active living, and alternative mobility projects for more than 25 years. This experience was recognized in 2014 by the Association for Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Jeff co-founded CitiBikes, taught bicycle and pedestrian planning at UAlbany for more than 20 years, is a principal with Alta Planning + Design, and is the author of “Third Mode:Towards a Green Society."
