ROB POPPER, PERSONAL TRIATHLON COACH

In the winter months, we will mostly be training indoors, making use of the fantastic swimming pool at the CRC, as well as the treadmills in the gym, and providing turbo trainers for club members in group cycling sessions every week. We will also make full use of the indoor facilities for technical drills, strength training, conditioning and flexibility sessions specifically designed for triathletes. As the weather gets warmer, we will take the sessions outdoors and make use of the beautiful, free swim, bike and run training grounds that the Catskills offers.

After the success of October's Weekend Workshops, I will also be conducting monthly workshops with video analysis in each discipline, throughout the year. Athletes came from all over the Hudson Valley to attend, with some people who were just interested in one sport, not necessarily wanting to do a triathlon, and that was great to have them join in. We also had some people who had never swum continuously for more than one or two lengths in a 25-yard swimming pool, and they also joined in, blowing us all away with how much they learned and how much fun they had learning more swim skills that day. We really are open to people of all abilities, and we want to radically dispel the notion that you already have to be an awesome athlete to come along and participate.

Catskill Mountains Swim Bike Run aims to combine all the best features of a triathlon club, like camaraderie and social support, with the chance for athletes of all levels to receive world-class triathlon coaching. All of us, whether we are training for our first or our fiftieth triathlon, whether we just want to cross the finish line in one piece or we want to go to the world championships, we have way more in common with each other than we might realize. We are all setting challenging goals for ourselves, juggling very busy schedules with work, home lives, social lives and training, trying to do the best we can with this crazy, wonderful sport of triathlon.  In my experience, a triathlon club with good, consistent coaching support can be a friendly, safe, motivational place for people to get started in the sport with confidence. A club can also be the best way for people to keep enjoying the sport and improving over time. Let’s face it, if you wake up early on a Sunday morning to go for a long bike ride, you are more likely to be motivated to get up and get out, week after week, if you know that some of your clubmates are going to be waiting for you, probably counting on you to show up, even when it is cold and wet and you would normally roll over and go back to sleep. I know that is largely how I have achieved my half-iron and iron-distance training goals in the past, and I just want to share some of that support and motivation with other athletes around the area.”

The CRC is already home to the “Cross Mountain Crusher” and the “Catskill Mountain Cycling Challenge” bike events, and Rebecca Manning, the Executive Director of the Center, is an experienced triathlete and endurance athlete. She has been incredibly supportive of this idea to start up a club here. The Catskill Recreation Center is a truly wonderful and unique sports facility, in the middle of this insanely beautiful part of the world with fantastic roads, trails, rivers and lakes. It just seems like Triathlon Heaven here in the Catskills. We are incredibly excited about this new venture, and we hope people will come out and give it a try!
