“ Let the Shenanigans Begin!” this Monroeville Mardi Gras carnival season. The City is hosting its fifth annual Cajun Take Over and Parades Saturday, February 23. The Whiz@Honk#& Sputter Old Tymer’s procession is a standout like no other with antique cars and pick-up trucks, Model- A’s, and Model-T’s. The celebration continues with adorned floats and characters in elation with this year’s theme, “Three’s A Charm!” Revelers will celebrate three’s featuring the Three Blind Mice, The Three Amigos, The Triple Crown, Three Musketeers . Other notable favorites include The Three Wise Monkeys, Harry Potter (Harry, Hermoine and Ron), Three Wishes, Three is the Magic Number, Three Men in a Tub, Angry Birds, Despicable Me 3 and the Star Wars Trilogy. This year the City of Monroeville will be selling Mardi Gras Long Sleeve T-Shirts at City Hall . Proceeds will go to the City of Monroeville’s Splash Pad. Visit City Hall located 125 Claiborne Street during operational hours. The price is $20 and must be preordered by February 1. We take cash, check, or credit card orders.
The Monroeville Mardi Gras Coronation takes place Monday , February 4 at 5pm at the Monroeville City Fountain located at Lyle Salter Park next to Johnson Jewelers.
The Cajun Takeover celebration begins at noon, Saturday, February 23rd on Monroeville’s historic downtown square. New this year the City of Monroeville host its first ever Mardi Gras Traditional Second Line Procession thru the Monroeville Square. Participants must dress up in Mardi Gras attire ( Gowns, Tuxedos, characters ) along with Mandatory decorated Mardi Gras colored Umbrellas, Festive Hats and Masks. The lineup will begin at the Lyle Salter Park Fountain Noon. This Second Line Procession is a pre-registered event. Groups can contact Event Coordinator, Dawn Brewton (Dweinbrenner@hotmail.com or 251-923-7470 to sign up deadline February 1. Stores will celebrate the occasion with specials discounts. Photo opportunities can be taken at the Meet and Greet Monroeville Queens and Kings Court located at Lyle Salter Park. Monroe County Heritage Museum hosts another Mardi Gras tradition during the Cajun TakeOver-The Moon Pie Eating Contest with various age flights for children and adults. Cost to register $5. Proceeds benefit the Monroe County Heritage Museum. Time 1:00 pm- ?
Our night parade will feature the Monroe King and Queen Coronation Float and our famous City of Monroeville float featuring Three Leaf Clovers, Leprechauns, Rainbows and Pots of Gold with Mayor Sandy Smith, the City Council and families. Experience Monroeville’s Mardi Gras with food truck vendors, live music, dancing in the streets, and restaurants serving New Orleans Cajun Creole cuisine.
If your civic group, business, school, or band wish to participate with float entries, contact the City’s Event Coordinator, Dawn Brewton 251-923-7470, dweinbrenner@hotmail.com. Vendor forms are available for arts and crafts booths too! The deadline to enter antique cars, bands, floats and vendor booths is February 8.
If you are interested in attending a Mardi Gras Ball this year the Monroeville Fire and Rescue will host its third Mardi Gras Ball at the Vanity Fair Golf and Tennis Club Saturday, February 16 (8pm – Midnight) Tickets are $30. Please contact the Monroeville Fire Department, Darby’s Red and White, or the Monroe Journal. The Eloquent Pearls and Diamonds Club will host their second Mardi Gras Ball this year at the Monroeville Community House (8pm-Midnight) Saturday, February 23. Tickets are $10.00 in advance.
