Event Name:
Geology Talks: Origin and Non-Evolution of North American Glyptodonts in the Pliocene and Pleistocene
Description
Glytpodonts were South American relatives of armadillos that reached sizes nearly as big as a VW bug and weights of a ton or more. They reached North America in the Pliocene as members of the Great American Biotic Interchange when the Isthmus of Panama formed a permanent land bridge. One genus survived that passage and expanded its population to the Gulf Coast of North America. It then ceased to evolve, a case of biological stasis with important implications. After occupying North America for 4 million years, it vanished at the end of the Ice Age. Dave Gillette Colbert, Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Museum of Northern Arizona presents the fascinating story of Glytpodonts. Geology Talks is hosted by the Central Arizona Geology Club and presented with funding from the Friends of the Prescott Public Library. This event includes an opportunity to ""show and tell"" and ask questions of Geology Club members.
