In support of The King Center’s MLK 50 Forward Challenge and in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the country commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination, as well as the passing of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity, the NM MLK Jr. State Commission, and the NM State Office of African American Affairs are joining hands to create the Beloved Community Initiative. This initiative will begin with supporting the building of an affordable and safe home for a low-income family on Albuquerque’s west mesa while increasing awareness of the Habitat for Humanity homeownership program within Albuquerque’s low-income communities of color.
The Beloved Community was a vision that Dr. King believed could be attained when a critical mass of people committed to and trained in the philosophy and methods of nonviolence. In his global vision, homelessness and hunger will not exist, and racism and prejudice will be replaced by the inclusive spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood.
Homes for Heroes® was established shortly following the tragic events of 9/11 as a way to give back and say “Thank You” to our nation’s Firefighters, Law Enforcement, Military (Active, Reserves and Veterans), Healthcare Workers, EMS and Teachers when buying, selling, or refinancing a home. They are a large nationwide network that provides easy ways for heroes to save significant money in the process of becoming, or as homeowners.
