'Loosen Up' Acrylic and Oil Painting with Derek Penix

Mountain Artists Guild is honored to have Derek Penix, the 2016 Gold Medal Award winner in Oil Painters of America’s 25th National Juried Exhibition where he won a $30,000 prize, come to teach a workshop for us. Derek was recognized in Southwest Art Magazine's “21 Under 31” artist competition in 2010, and Oklahoma Magazine's "40 Under 40" in 2014. This three-day workshop is for all skill levels from beginner to advanced. Derek will cover topics such as the power of warms and cools, complementary, harmony, edges, shape-quality, variety, simplifying, loosening brushwork, elements of design, elements of light and shadow and the power of suggestion. There will be a strong emphasis on seeing in terms of mass and shape relationships.

Derek Penix didn't pursue painting himself until after high school. After trying his hand at painting and selling his first piece he knew this was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Over the years Penix's work has changed greatly and continues to evolve with each painting. "I never want to be stuck painting only one way or only one subject matter. Variety is the spice of life and is especially that way for me with painting." He has been recognized in many national competitions and publications.
