Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy, with a portfolio of more than 27,500 megawatts of generation, 12,000 miles of natural gas transmission, gathering and storage pipeline and 6,000 miles of electric transmission lines. DOMINION: 100 Years and Going Strong
In the summer of 2009, Dominion launched a year-long celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of its electric business.
While the company can trace its corporate roots to the late 1790s, it was the formation of Virginia Railway and Power Company on June 29, 1909, that marked the beginning of modern-day Dominion. On that day, three separate streetcar lines in Richmond were merged into one.
Over the next two decades, the company grew into a reputable supplier of light and power and trolley car service, as well as a distributor of natural gas. In 1925, marking a shift from transportation to electricity, Stone & Webster Inc. purchased the company, merged it with the Spotsylvania Co. of Fredericksburg and created Virginia Electric and Power Co., or VEPCO.
Community Focus
Dominion has long invested in communities through programs, volunteer activities and charitable giving. Dominion’s outreach is directed primarily to the states where it provides electricity and natural gas: Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina and West Virginia.
It also supports selected civic and charitable endeavors in locations where it has major facilities and business interests.
Volunteering in the Community
Dominion employees have long been active in their communities and have received formal company support for more than two decades.
Each year, employees donate thousands of hours of time and their skills to support a variety of programs. Concern for children and families is a priority of our volunteers.
Employees also organize and lead community projects to meet specific local needs. For the past seven years, employees have identified local parks and educational facilities in 14 states that are in need of repairs and refurbishing.
With materials purchased by the company, volunteers have built outdoor classrooms and nature trails, created outdoor learning gardens and urban tree gardens, and completed other projects that enhance environmental educational opportunities.
Employees also have adopted local schools, where activities include mentoring and tutoring, painting classrooms and building playgrounds.

On March 24, 2010, Dominion received approval from the Virginia SCC of an energy efficiency plan that can result in savings for our customers.

Partnerships and Endorsements
In addition to information on reducing consumption, Dominion is partnering with the U.S. EPA/DOE ENERGY STAR program to help get the word out about using energy-efficient appliances and making energy-efficiency improvements at home.
We also endorse the National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency Recommendations, which provides principles and guidelines for state legislatures, public utility commissions and electric utilities to use in orser to meet the nation's growing demand for energy by delivery cost-effective demand-side options.
In addition, Dominion Virginia Power has partnered with EarthCraft House™ Virginia to deliver a voluntary green building program to serve as a blueprint for healthy, comfortable homes that reduce energy consumption and protect the environment in the Commonwealth.
