A unique framework designed to empower communities to govern themselves from within, fostering transparent and inclusive decision-making processes. This framework, known as a "Ting," enables groups of people to collectively decide on matters ranging from apartment sharing to neighborhood-wide future planning. The core principle of a Ting is a commitment to "one person, one vote" and a transparent process that everyone can trust. Currently being developed and tested in Altadena, California, particularly in areas rebuilding after the Eaton Fire, Alting addresses the challenge of bringing diverse voices together to make decisions about streets, infrastructure, and community future.

The process involves clearly defining problems, proposing options, facilitating thorough discussions where every voice is heard, making decisions through a vote, and recording these decisions as a transparent product. This record serves as proof of collective agreement, usable with landlords, city councils, utility companies, or for internal group reference. Alting is actively being applied in contexts such as burned neighborhoods deciding on infrastructure, unburned blocks building community connections through mutual aid, and commercial corridors designing their future with climate resilience in mind. The initiative also supports collective management of community gardens, trust-based rotating savings groups, and shared resources like cars or tool libraries, ensuring transparent rules for all shared assets.
