The West Elks American Viticultural Area (AVA) stretches across Delta County on Colorado’s beautiful Western Slope. Home to some of the highest-elevation vineyards in North America, it’s also responsible for some of the very best wines in the state. At first glance, this high mesa tucked into the Colorado Rockies might not seem like grape-growing country but spend a little time here, and you’ll quickly discover just how special it is.
West Elks is especially known for its wonderful white wines. Riesling and Gewürztraminer truly shine in this climate, and Pinot Gris and Chardonnay thrive as well. The combination of high elevation, low humidity, warm sunny days, and cool mountain nights helps the grapes ripen slowly while holding onto their bright, natural acidity. That balance is fantastic for all the varieties grown here, but it’s particularly magical for Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
And it’s not just about the whites. Red wines do beautifully here too. Pinot Noir has found a happy home on the mesa slopes, benefiting from those warm days and crisp nights. You’ll also find some outstanding Merlots that showcase the region’s unique character.
All in all, West Elks proves that great wine can come from the most unexpected—and breathtaking places.
