Senior Care Action Network (SCAN) Health Plan
In 1977, a group of twelve senior activists in Long Beach, California, recognized the need for improved access to essential services for seniors wishing to age safely and comfortably in their own homes. Despite the availability of these services within the city, they were not easily accessible. In response to this pressing issue, the city established the not-for-profit Long Beach Geriatric Health Care System.
This system was later rebranded as the Senior Care Action Network (SCAN), reflecting its comprehensive network of services and programs designed to meet the diverse needs of its senior population. These services ranged from meal delivery and home repair to medical care, transportation, housing assistance, and more. The involvement of approximately 35 organizations underscored SCAN's commitment to serving a culturally diverse community.
Over time, SCAN seized opportunities presented by state and federal governments to expand its role as a leading provider of senior care and support. In 1984, SCAN launched its first Medicare health plan known as a Social HMO—a milestone that marked the organization's unwavering dedication to enhancing senior healthcare.
Today, SCAN Health Plan continues to be at the forefront of advocating for and providing high-quality care for seniors in Henderson, Nevada. With a rich history rooted in grassroots activism and community collaboration, SCAN remains committed to empowering seniors with access to essential resources that enable them to live fulfilling lives while aging gracefully at home.
As an organization deeply invested in promoting healthy aging and independence among older adults, SCAN Health Plan is proud of its legacy as a driving force in senior care and looks forward to continuing this important work well into the future.
